Demonstrations and petitions have not been able to persuade the management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) from going ahead with their plans to admit girls into two hitherto all-male halls of residence – Continental Hall and Katanga.
The school’s authority is bent on changing the gender population of the two halls and the alumni of these two halls are also mounting the pressure to get this decision reversed.
As persuasion has failed to yield any results – the alumni of Continental Hall has taken the matter to court.
With this lawsuit, the alumni are seeking the court to rule in their favour and also give a perpetual order that will prevent any other KNUST official from embarking on such route in the near future.
“… A perpetual injunction restraining the defendants or their successors from ever attempting to alter the character and nature of Unity Hall from an all-male hall to a mixed-sex hall,” one of the reliefs says.
