The University of Ghana Debate Society is poised for the 5th edition of the annual Ghana University Debate Championship (GUDC), which will officially open today, July 13 and end on July 19, 2018. The 25-member team is to set off for the University for Development Studies, Tamale, where the championship is taking place.
The competition is organized by the Ghana University Debaters Association (GUDA), initiated by the University of Ghana in 2014, with the aim of promoting intellectual discourse among students through public speaking and debates on societal issues.
This year’s competition will see debaters from the University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast, University of Education (Kumasi Campus), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Health and Allied Sciences, Central University, University of Energy and Natural Resources, All Nations University, Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, Zenith University and of course the host university, University for Development Studies.
Team UG comprises of the Debate Coordinator, a Coach, 9 judges, and 16 members grouped in 8 teams. The team will compete in the Public Speaking category, with each member of the team as a Speaker or an Adjudicator.
Team UG were winners at the maiden edition of the championship but KNUST has won the competition consecutively thereafter. The team, however, is pumped up and ready to redeem the bragging rights as the tertiary Debating Champions, after intense training under the coaching of Antonio Edem Asinyo, one of UG’s primo debaters. Asinyo led UG to the semifinals of the World Universities Public Speaking Category Championship and is confident that it’s team UG for gold!
