He has 5 mixtapes and dozens of singles to his credit which totals to over 70 songs since he started recording in 2009. In 2010, Kula recorded and released “Call to Rector”, a song which addressed students’ grievances in Ho Technical University where he was a student. The Rector of the institution heard the song and most of the complaints were rectified. Eg. In 2014, his song “Ahoe RoundAbout” became the biggest Hip-hop song from and about Ho, the Volta Regional Capital. Till date, no other Hip-hop song has topped that.

In 2017, his song GoDJ, which gave shoutouts to 60+ Ghanaian DJs was made the official song for Ghana DJ Awards 2017.

ORIGIN STORY

Kula grew up in the seaside town of British Accra called Jamestown. Being the 2nd child out of 3, to an Ewe dad and Fante mom; Mr Daniel Tawiah Mattey and Mrs Comfort Mattey, he spent the early years of his life in Jamestown. They later moved to Dansoman where he enrolled in Most Holy Heart Preparatory School. In school, he was a Boy Scout and later joined the Drama Club where he became the President at a point. He stared in 2 stage plays. The first was a supporting role and he later got the main role. At the age of 11, he used to record songs by Obrafour, Tinny, Okyeame Kwame and the likes whenever they were played on the radio. That was the only way he could get a playback and learn the lyrics. English language and Vocational Skills (Pre-Tech & Needlework) were his favourite subjects. He and his friends formed the “Mo Clan” in Junior High and that was how he got his first Nickname, Sexy Mo.

In Senior High School,  Kula became the Seniors’ favourite junior as he was usually seen rapping for seniors just to escape punishments. He was later elected Entertainment Prefect for the 2007/2008 academic year in Mawuli School, Ho.

In 2009, Kula recorded 2 singles (Ho Poly Girls & I Love Central Hall). These songs became popular in Ho Polytechnic (now Ho Technical University) and that made him, a fresher at that time, one of the most popular students in school. That was the start of his music career.

CAREER

2018 – Kula bagged 6 Nominations in the Maiden Edition of Volta Music Awards, which includes Rapper of the year, hip-hop song of the year and Overall Artiste of the Year. A Music Video sponsored by Black Avenue Music Boss, D-Black is underway.

2017 – Aside performing at 2 Major Samsung Product Launches(Galaxy S8|S8+ & Galaxy Note8), he took to the streets with a compilation of his work on a CD and sold close to 1,000 copies within 4months. Also, he released GoDJ, a song that was later made the Official Song for the Ghana DJ Awards.

2016 – Kula released his first Official Music Video to his song AMEN off the Experiment X Mixtape. He performed on many stages and was named “The Crowd’s Favourite” by Accra Dot Alt after his performance at ChaleWote Street Art Festival 2016.

2015 – Kula released 2 mixtapes, Experiment Xa solo, 21 track self-produced mixtape which had features from Ghanaian Hip-hop icon, C-Real and other Nigerian upcoming acts like Lex, Yemi Doe, Manny, Kelz, etc.. Then came GhaGeria2A sequel to the GhaGeria Mixtape that was released the year before.

2014 – He made a Joint Hiphop Mixtape with Kelz, a Nigerian rapper and a very good friend of his. It’s because of the Ghana – Nigeria collaboration that birthed the name of the mixtape, GhaGeria. He also released “Ahoe RoundAbout”, a song that later became the biggest Hip-hop song to ever emerge from Ho and about Ho.

2011 – He released his second mixtape, The K.U.L.A Mixtape. This had 17 songs and it reaffirmed his position as the number 1 artiste in HTU.

After graduating with a Higher National Diploma in Marketing in 2012, he took one year off music to serve his country. He did his National Service at the Information Service Department, Nkawkaw in the Kwahu West District.

Upon completion of his Service, he visited Nigeria a couple of times, where he worked on the next 3 mixtapes he released.

2010 – He released his first self-produced Mixtape Personality Konphlikt (Freddie Vs. Kula), a 16 track mixtape with a split personality concept. One of the hit songs on that tape was Call To Rector, which shot him up to the Number 1 Artiste of the school, performing at every show in the school and the entire Ho township.

ART SOUL

  • INFLUENCES: Influenced at an early age by the likes of Obrafour, Nas, Okyeame Kwame and Eminem, Kula’s lyrics are geared more towards educating and entertaining the listener than the stereotypical braggadocios nature of the hip-hop genre. Life experience is a great influence on his sound as every song and lyric relates to a real-life situation or story with less flashy and meaningless content.

  • MUSICAL STYLE: Kula is a reflection of a vibrant young man sharing his world with everyone by rapping about any and everything, from the seemingly terrestrial, to Ghanaian film icons & musicians like Joselyn Dumas/ Feli Nuna/ MUSIGA High School,, to passing social commentary on  social media  addiction, degenerating societies and youth misconduct, Daddy issues, etc

There’s an endearing energy about Kula that keeps you listening. Whether it’s his realness or the humour he constructs his lyrics with, this hip-hop artist is quite the entertainer.

He’s who you listen to when you want to relate with a hommie, without going down the rabbit hole of deciphering complex lines and nuanced truths nor being sucked into a vortex of underwhelming, flat and mindless lyrics. He draws inspiration from Real life situations and happenings of everyday life.

PUBLIC IMAGE: Over the years, Kula has built a very respectable brand and comes off as a hardworking and focused artiste with fewer scandals and controversies surrounding him. He inspires a lot of his followers with his posts and is admired by many industry players and other upcoming acts who look up to him. As a Radio Show Host on Yfm, promoting Upcoming Artistes is his main focus and he has 80% Ghanaian Content on his radio show.

OTHER BUSINESSES AND VENTURES: A Radio Broadcaster at YFM. A host of the #LyricistLounge, a strictly Hip-hop Show that seeks to promote more Ghanaian Upcoming than Mainstream Artistes/ Beat Producers.
