The Government Has Banned The Importation Of Our Favorite Tilapia Over A Virus Scare

In Ghana, we don’t joke with our Banku and spiced Tilapia with hot green and black pepper. Tilapia is used for quite a number of delicious delicacies.

Sadly, the government of Ghana has banned imports of ornamental fishes and Tilapia species following reports of an emerging new virus; Tilapia Lake Virus

This ban is to take effect from this Sunday, 1st of July to the end of the year, 31st December 2018. This will help the ministry control and prevent the virus. The treatment of this new virus is unknown which is indeed heartbreaking.

The public is hereby advised to take precautions on the intake of ornamental fishes and tilapia ( alive or dead).  Consumers and stakeholders are to report such cases that may arise to the Ministry Of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development.

The statement is signed by the Acting Chief Director of the Ministry, Prof Francis K. E. Nunoo, who has stated that the Ministry will conduct follow-ups to ensure awareness creation.

This is where we say goodbye to our favourite Tilapia. We’ll miss it.
