Well, this is a first for this year on the National Science and Maths Quiz stage.
We do understand that losing out progress to the next stage in a competition like the NSMQ is an emotional one.
But little were we prepared for the near funeral scene that was created on the stage of the NSMQ today.
It was a heated contest between Holy Child SHS, Breman Asikuma SHS and Akwawuman SHS.
The Akwawuman team of Richard Obuobi Akoto and Collins Ikenna Levi kept keeping taps on Holy Child all through the contest with the hope of causing an upset in the last minutes.
Here is how the battle began.
They seemed out of the competition.
The problem of the day was no better for the boys from Akwawuman.
However, at the end of round 4 – they had caught up with the leading pack.
Now, getting to the end of the contest, Akwawuman was at 31 points and they just had to answer the last riddle to win the contest.
With Holy Child at 33 points then…If Akwawuman had got the last riddle right, it would have put them over Holy Child.
Collins Ikenna Levi knew the correct answer but Richard Obuobi Akoto also claimed that he knew the answer to the riddle.
So Richard raised his hand, provided the answer but the Quiz Mistress, Dr Elsie Kauffaman marked him down – Richard’s answer was wrong.
With that wrong answer from Akwawuman – Holy Child held onto their 33 points to win the competition.
This then ushered in the crying round. Not even the quiz mistress could console the two who all but thought they had beaten Holy Child school to progress to the quarterfinals of the 2018 National Science and Maths Quiz.
All the best to Richard and Collins.
