So you may have been wondering what the “Office of the Dean of Students” is. Why is it so important?
Well, the office is responsible for the academic counselling and placement of students, the provision of chaplaincy services through the chaplaincy board to students and other members of the university community, the resolution of conflicts between students and residential halls and making presentation to the university about ways of enhancing the quality of a student’s life.
For those who didn’t understand all that, the office just deals with general student affairs including academic and extracurricular affairs. So, yeah, your hall weeks, church programs, debates and whatnot have to pass through the dean of student affairs.
Well, the office has changed hands, from Professor Francis Nunoo who was appointed in 2016 and is currently on a two-year leave, to Professor Godfred Alufar Bopkin.
What about him?
The new dean, who was formerly the head of the Finance Department at the University of Ghana Business School, earned his B.Sc (Admin) in Accounting in 2003 with First Class Honors (wow).
He also earned an MPhil in Finance in 2006 from the University of Ghana and got promoted to senior lecturer in 2010. He served a two-year probation period before getting a PhD in Economics at Osaka University, that helped his later appointment as Head, Department of Finance, University of Ghana Business School.
Professor Bopkin is also described as very warm and humble by students who know him personally.
Let’s wish him well and hope he does his best.
