What To Do When You Get Laid Off Or Sacked From Your Workplace

Nobody goes to work with the thought of being sacked or getting laid off. It is one of the hardest things to come to terms with especially if you are young and looking forward to actually building a solid career in some years to come.

Losing your job unexpectedly is hard but could happen to anyone and in as much as it’s hard when it happens to you, life definitely needs to go on for you to move on to something else.

Now, here are a few possible steps to follow in case you happen to find yourself in such a situation.

Before anything else, you are a human being with feelings so this is definitely going to get to you. Handle it like a breakup. Cry if you have to. Take that break from everything and from everyone if you have to. Have that closure and endure all of the pain for that period. When you are making that come back it will be with a harder conviction of achieving whatever the new goals that you have set are. So yes Grief! Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Don’t Let It Control You

Yes, we know you are grieving and all that but it doesn’t mean you should let it control you or dictate what your mood should be. There is no need for brooding or moping around. Put yourself together because life goes on so why should yours come to a standstill?

Reach Out To Your Existing Network and Former Colleagues

If you always had a frown on your face when you were at work or never had any friends this is where you will start biting your fingertips. The best people to help you with alternatives are the friends/colleagues you made at your workplace. Let them help you with possible alternative places that they know of. You can also contact the individuals you met through network sessions who don’t work in your former company. Depending on your relationship with them, they can also help with options.

Have A Plan Around Your Finances

We are pretty sure you saved some money during the period that you were working. Now that you know what your situation is and you have made plans concerning what your next step of action will be, you need to plan how to manage the money you have saved so you don’t end up borrowing from people that you cannot even pay. It might take months before you even get a job so if you have any side job that you can do to supplement what you have saved that would also be a great idea.

Update Your CV/Social Media Profiles

You can update your CV with your work experience from your former workplace. In the age of technology and social media, it might be a good idea to state what you are good at on social media and get your followers to share so you can get a few messages and referrals. You should have seen by now how people tweet their capabilities and “appeal” to the good side of their followers to retweet so they can get a job. Linked In is also another platform to utilize for job opportunities.
