Kuulpeeps, so you know that we’re here for anything artistic.
So we had a conversation with Mayker,
A level 300 Sociology student, a resident of Pent and an uprising musician who recently released a new single.
Read on to find out what we discussed.
Kuulpeeps Legon: hey thanks for making time for us.
Mayker: Sure anytime!
Kuulpeeps Legon: Hehe. Alright. Ok, so what is the story behind your stage name, Mayker?
Mayker: Erhm… A friend of mine gave me the name back in high school because I seemed to always have a solution to every problem
Kuulpeeps Legon: Lol I see. But what’s your real name though?
Mayker: Jeffrey Mettle-Nunoo
Kuulpeeps Legon: Cool, but we’re curious, do you get asked if you’re related to Joe Mettle a lot?
Mayker: Lol always
Kuulpeeps Legon: Are you?
Mayker: Yeah, he is a distant cousin I think.
Kuulpeeps Legon: Oh fine.We see you rocking your dyed hair a lot, what inspired that look?
Mayker: Hahaha yeah yeah. You liking the vibes err…I love to explore and experiment a lot. I wanted to try a different look. I’m thinking of changing the current colour to grey
Kuulpeeps Legon: Ey lol… So aside from your hair, what else do you like to get creative with?
Mayker: My music. I write my music based on what I feel and can relate to.
Kuulpeeps Legon: Deep! How long have you been doing music?
Mayker: 6 years
Kuulpeeps Legon: Wow that’s long?
Mayker: Yep. I’ve been singing since I was very young.
Kuulpeeps Legon: How old were you?
Mayker: Hahaha smart one concerning my age. I’m not telling.
Kuulpeeps Legon: And any performances?
Mayker: Oh yeah. I’ve had my fair share of performances for the past couple of years. Kona Cafe gave me my first exposure thanks to Kacey Moore. Then Django Bar, and a couple of performances on Legon campus
Kuulpeeps Legon: Cool.. be like you and your music career have been places. Anyway, which of your performance do you consider as the most memorable?
Mayker: My performance at Django Bar. Many well-known musicians were present and it felt good to see smiles on their faces as they appreciated my voice. Plus, they were all very nice to me afterwards and I even got to interact with Grandpapa (Reggie Rockstone) himself. We still communicate on regular basis.
Kuulpeeps Legon: Ooouuu… go you. However we know you’ve had not-so-good ones, haven’t you? Which was your worse and what happened?
Mayker: My worst ones are a couple and it was the same incident that occurred. I was put on the bill to perform and I had everyone who loved my music present to watch but I wasn’t allowed to mount the stage with the excuse of “The Big stars are here” SMH. We shun on caterpillars and celebrate butterflies. I now perfectly understand why some celebrities dey see demma body.
Kuulpeeps Legon: Lol…erm that’s sad. However, generally, how has music changed your life?
Mayker: Well Music has brought me into contact with lots of beautiful people, it has given me exposure. love being the talk of town and I can boldly say I’m getting there
Kuulpeeps Legon: What impact has music had on you or why do you think you love doing music?
Mayker: Music is art. Music is life. Music makes me feel whole. Have you ever imagined a world without music? How was it like?
Kuulpeeps Legon: Erm you tell us
Mayker: Not even close to being boring I tell you
Kuulpeeps Legon: Lol yeah right. So which musicians inspire you and your style of music?
Mayker: First let me say, my mum influenced the genre of music I’m into because I grew up listening to the likes of West Life, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Celine Deon, R. Kelly, Charley! The list is long. They all really inspired me to do music back then. However, In recent times I look up to the likes of Bruno Mars, Chris Brown, and E.L.
Kuulpeeps Legon: So the whole RNB thingy huh?
Mayker: You know right!
Kuulpeeps Legon: And while we’re on the subject of family, how does your family feel about your career choice?
Mayker: Hmm well, it took a while to convince my mum. She’s my biggest fan now tho, however, my Dad is quite indifferent about it and for the rest of the family, I think they’re happy about the change in the trend of professions in the family since a bunch of them are educationist, lawyers, bankers, politicians, but mostly lawyers.
Kuulpeeps Legon: Oh wow. How many songs have you made so far?
Mayker: seven songs.
Kuulpeeps Legon: Alright, any new one coming up?
Mayker: Well I just dropped a single titled “Moved On”
Kuulpeeps Legon: When was this?
Mayker: Two days ago, on the 29th of March
Kuulpeeps Legon: What’s the message behind “Moved on”
Mayker: So I wrote the song based on a heartbreak. It took me a pretty long while to heal so I figured I should put it in a song, to inspire other people to try to move on from their broken hearts and bad relationships. There’s more to life than bitterness
Kuulpeeps Legon: Aww, lol. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Mayker: Ok so in 5 years I hope to have people around the world craving my presence and my music
Kuulpeeps Legon: Aside from music, what else do you see yourself venturing into later in the future?
Mayker: I love making money, so hopefully I’ll set up a couple of businesses to keep a regular cash inflow.
Kuulpeeps Legon: Erh heh… who would you like have a collaboration with?
Mayker: E.L. I’ve been chasing him since 2012. I told him the last time we met. Ein brain bost! Hehehehe.
Kuulpeeps Legon: So lemme guess, he’s one of your favourite Ghanaian musicians right?
Mayker: yeah you got that right!
Kuulpeeps Legon: Any other 2?
Mayker: That will be Stonebwoy and Joey b
Kuulpeeps Legon: what are your favourite song right now?
Mayker: Bye Bye boo by EL, Bawasaaba by Stonebwoy and Kojo Antwi’s Adiepena.
