The word “bitter” sure doesn’t sound appealing to your ears, does it? It most certainly isn’t something you might think you’re craving, however, you would be rather surprised to know that your body actually does crave bitter foods. Bitter foods help bring balance to your body.

Below are 5 of the healthiest bitter foods ever, and why they are so important.

 

BITTER LEAF

The name needs no introduction. Bitter leaf, popularly used to prepare soup in the eastern part of Nigeria, is now known to be a wonder vegetable with medicinal properties, which can be used to treat different ailments; it is great at reducing blood sugar levels in diabetic patients. It’s actually a bitter plant whose leaves, extracts, stem and bark are filled with vitamins including Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin B1 and Vitamin B2. Some of the health benefits of bitter leaf include:

  • An increase in metabolic speed and functioning, making it great for weight loss.
  • The reduction and relief of fever and feverish conditions. To do this, take the squeezed juice, 3 times until the symptoms disappear

The health benefits of dandelion include relief from liver disorders, urinary disorders, acne, and jaundice. It is also beneficial in fighting against diabetes, cancer and anaemia. It also helps in maintaining bone health, skin care and is a benefit to weight loss programs.

Despite the bitter taste of Kale, it is one of the best of all the super healthy greens. It is definitely one of the healthiest and most nutritious plant foods in existence. Kale is loaded with all sorts of beneficial compounds, some of which have powerful medicinal properties. Kale is extremely high in vitamin C, an antioxidant that has many important roles in the body. A single cup of raw kale actually contains more vitamin C than an orange. Kale contains substances that bind bile acids and lower cholesterol levels in the body. Steamed kale is particularly very high in beta-carotene, an antioxidant that the body can turn into vitamin A. Many important minerals are found in kale, some of which are generally lacking in the modern diet. This includes calcium, potassium and magnesium.

ARUGULA

Arugula is a rich source of certain phytochemicals, which have been shown to combat cancer-causing elements in the body. Arugula is also a great source of folic acid and vitamins A, C and K. As one of the best vegetable sources of Vitamin K, arugula provides a boost for bone and brain health.

Arugula has an array of minerals and high levels of Iron and Copper, making it a good substitute for spinach if you’re interested in incorporating more vegetable-based iron in your diet. Like other leafy greens, arugula is also a hydrating food, helping to keep your body hydrated in the heat of summer.
