The University of Cape Coast is budding with new talents and creatives in the entertainment sector and one of the new talents we have found is Opana- pop, a stand-up comedian. We met up with him for a brief chat, below is our interesting conversation.
KuulpeepsUCC: Hi there!
Opana: Hey guys.
KuulpeepsUCC: Who’s this Opana we’ve been hearing about?
Opana: Opana is my stage name as a comedian, birth name, however, is Prince Opoku and I enjoy making people laugh.
KuulpeepsUCC: What program do you read?
Opana: B.Ed. Management.
KuulpeepsUCC: How did you get into comedy?
Opana: It all started in SHS, there was this entertainment night that included comedy. Nobody was willing to represent my house so I went for the mic, cracked a few Basketmouth jokes I could remember and got everybody laughing. I’ve never looked back since.
Kuulpeepsucc: What school did you attend?
Opana: Osei Tutu Senior High School.
KuulpeepsUCC: If you weren’t doing comedy, what would you be doing aside schooling?
Opana: I love rapping too, I actually used to rap before comedy. I’m also an actor. So I guess I would still be into entertainment.
KuulpeepsUCC: Can you choose between school and comedy?
Opana: Not really oo but the passion for comedy is really deep. It’s something I’ll pursue full time.
KuulpeepsUCC: There’s this myth around campus guys who are famous and their other passion being girls. Have you had such experience?
Opana: Ei saa then I am yet to start oo. Lol, personally I don’t do that.
KuulpeepsUCC: Don’t you have a girlfriend?
Opana: I have only one please. (laughs)
KuulpeepsUCC: Are your parents supportive of your comedy path?
Opana: mmm I think so… Maame nu de3 she would want me to focus on schooling. Dad, however, supports fully.
KuulpeepsUCC: Who is your favourite comedian?
Opana: I admire a whole lot of comedians; Trevor Noah cuts it for me.
KuulpeepsUCC: How’s stand-up comedy in Ghana? How do you fancy your chances for a major breakthrough?
Opana: I am getting there gradually… I believe it’s just a matter of time considering how far I’ve come. I’ve performed with Romanus, Lekzy and others so it’s just a matter of time.
KuulpeepsUCC: As a young comedian what do people like Romanus tell you when you meet them?
Opana: A few jokes (hehe) and words of encouragement mostly.
KuulpeepsUCC: What’s your proudest moment?
Opana: When I hosted my own event- ‘’CRACK A RIB’’ and my first performance in UCC during the SRC fun night. UCC got laughing on those two occasions. I felt proud.
KuulpeepsUCC: Where do you want to see yourself in the next five years?
Opana: In the next 5 years Opana should a name in the African comedy scene and beyond. ‘’CRACK A RIB’’ should be held across the continent.
KuulpeepsUCC: All the best in your endeavours.
Opana: Thanks so much guys for having me.
