The Ghanaian Soldier Who Died Saving Lives In New York Has Been Awarded A Medal

Private 1st Class Emmanuel Mensah, 28 has been awarded The Soldier’s Medal.

The Soldier’s Medal is the Army’s highest award for heroism that occurs outside of combat.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo also awarded PFC. Mensah with the New York State Medal for Valor, the state’s highest military award for acts of heroism on and off the battlefield.

He died in a massive apartment house fire in the Bronx on Dec. 28, 2017 after saving 4 other people from the fire.

It was reported that he entered the building three times to save others who were stuck in the fire.

Twelve New York City residents including PFC. Mensah died in the fire which began after 6:30 p.m.

Fire department investigators say the blaze was started by a young boy playing with a gas stove. The fire spread after the child’s family escaped the apartment and neglected to close the apartment door behind them
