Here’s UG SRC’s Response To Allegations That It Embezzled Student’s Funds

Following the allegations against the SRC president on the embezzlement of funds, it was reported that a 5 member commission had been set up to investigate the claims made by former Financial Controller of USAG, Mr Daniel Obeng.

However, this afternoon, the SRC finally spoke up on the issue and issued out a communique signed by the President, Daniel Otting Awuah urging students to ignore publications concerning the alleged scandal. He referred to the reports as misleading, completely untrue and devoid of factual accuracies.

Concerning the Commision of Enquiry that was set up, it read: “The notice of the SRC has been drawn to a supposed commission of enquiry that has been set up to investigate an alleged case of financial misappropriation in the SRC

It is hereby stated by this medium that no such commission exists with the mandate spelt out in the Constitution to carry out such a task. This is because there has not been a constitutionally held General Assembly to pass the resolution”

The committee was appointed on Monday, 13th of November at a meeting which the SRC President insists cannot pass as a legal General Assembly meeting because the necessary quorum was not reached. One of the requirements in the Constitution requires that the SRC President or his Vice must be present at any General Assembly before it can be given the legal strength it deserves.

However, the meeting which was held on Monday did not have either of these two officers present, due to what the SRC believes was the unwillingness of the leadership of the General Assembly to execute an order from the Dean of Students’ Affairs which called for the removal of the Deputy Speaker of the General Assembly from office and/or be stripped of the capacity to conduct the business of the house.

The President,in the communique, explained that it was this obvious disregard for authority by the General Assembly coupled with what he referred to as the need to respect the sanctity of institutions in the University that resulted in their decision to refrain from participating in the meeting in the first place.

The SRC has asked the general student body to disregard any publications purporting the selection of some commission of enquiry to conduct the said investigations and promises to investigate the matter and report on the facts of the issue as they are.
