Kuulpeeps Ashesi, you’re slacking if you haven’t noticed the fine fine gentleman who rocks sneakers and complements them with his designer wear t-shirts and pants. Ladies!!! Trust us when we tell you he is 6″3 and a basketball player. Yaaaaaaassssss!!!
Nana Kwame Addo Adjei-Maafo is a final year student of Ashesi University College. He is a Business Administration major and the Chairperson of the Entertainment Committee. He is the face of fashion on the Ashesi campus. Kuulpeeps, trust us when we tell you he is one of the outstanding classy guys on campus.
Kuulpeeps Ashesi: What’s your personal style?
Nana Addo: I don’t really have a personal style, but I think I like to be comfortable in what I’m wearing and it has to be trendy. If it meets both and it is stylish, like yeah… And it looks good on me, I guess I’ll probably go for it.
Kuulpeeps Ashesi: There have been various fashion trends over the years. There was a point where torn jeans were the ish, then came the flower-like tops, and so on. What has been your favorite trend?
Nana Addo: The thing is… I’ve never actually been into dressing up. I’ve been into sneakers. I was into sneakers. Sneakers is my thing. So the T-shirts are just to complement the sneakers. Usually the focus is to have the flashy sneakers. I mean that’s what it has been. But now, I guess it’s head to toe because I am getting older, so I can’t dress as young as I used to do.
Kuulpeeps Ashesi: In terms of sneakers what would you recommend for guys?
Nana Addo: I prefer sneakers that can fit every occasion. In as much as I like basketball sneakers, I wouldn’t buy basketball sneakers. Because I can’t really wear it anywhere. But I would get Jordans and the specific Jordans I will get… Like the 1s, the 7s. Preferably the 1s cause they’re the most fashionable sneakers.
Kuulpeeps Ashesi: Would you go in for ordinary sneakers?
Nana Addo: Not ordinary sneakers. I don’t like ordinary sneakers though. That’s the thing. I don’t like sneakers I see everybody wearing. Back in the day in Junior High School (JHS), it was more like a competition and I think that’s where it started from. The fact that my friends and I have always been going at it. Like sneakers. Back then, we used to wear the uniform, so you can’t really compete. But when it came to the sneakers, that’s where the real competition was.
Kuulpeeps Ashesi: Does your mood depict the way you dress?
Nana Addo: My mood? Do I have a mood? Generally no. The way I’m dressed can affect my mood. If I’m in a bad mood, and I’m dressed looking nice, I’ll be more nice to people.
Kuulpeeps Ashesi: What’s your ideal definition of style?
Nana Addo: Style is just making what you have look good. I mean to an extent. It’s not necessarily having the expensive stuff, but it is people that have the basic things and they can make it look trendy.
Kuulpeeps Ashesi: Are you a trend follower or your set your own trend?
Nana Addo: Trend follower. If there’s a sneaker in season, I would be like…. oh that’s nice, that’s cool. But… I don’t follow trends. Not because I don’t. I feel like fashion in its sense revolves. Rip jeans and the others are a thing of the past. It went out of season and then it came back because maybe some designer put it on some fashion show. Nothing is new, it’s things that were already there. Just find your style and stick with it. Someway somehow, it will come back in season, and it will be like yeah… You’ve always been on top.
Kuulpeeps Ashesi: Do you go for fashion shows?
Nana Addo: Yeah… I always try to be there for the New York Fashion Shows. For the Ghanaian shows, I think I’ve been to one. The Glitz Fashion Show.
Kuulpeeps Ashesi: What’s your favorite fashion era, the 80s, 90s, millennial?
Nana Addo: Honestly, I can’t say. I don’t think I have one.
Kuulpeeps Ashesi: Who is your favorite designer, be it local or international? And why?
Nana Addo: My favourite designer would be Virgil Abloh. He is the designer for Off White. His style is very unique. He can take basic things and make them the next level. There are only few people who can appreciate what he does. He is the kind of person who influences people that are doing great things. For example; Kanye West and the likes.
Kuulpeeps Ashesi: You’ve been nominated twice for Ubora Awards for the male category of Star Image. Are there any fashion tips you would love to share with those who are aspiring to be nominated for the prestigious excellence awards?
Nana Addo: Honestly, looking good is not… If you look good for people, you will probably not look accomplished. I feel you should do it for yourself. I know people in this school who wake up an extra hour early to want to dress up extra, and you need to love to do that to be able to wake up to do that. As for me, I like to look good. I don’t have to wake up that early to dress up. It’s not like I have to put on make-up. Honestly when I wake up, I guess I know how to put things together to make them look nice. There are days I’ll dress extra and there are days I’ll just take my time because I am tired.
Kuulpeeps Ashesi: Any more fashion tips?
Nana Addo: Just invest in yourself. I like clothes. So maybe, other people will save to get gadgets and things. I would go out of my way to make money to save to buy clothes. Not anything outrageous.
Kuulpeeps Ashesi: Are there any other factors which influence the way you dress?
Nana Addo: I think it’s the people whom you hang around with. I’ve been following people like… So there are people who influence me. I used to go to New York every summer. There’s this one guy called El Vi. I mean if you’re in New York and you’re a Ghanaian and you’ve been to the Bronx, you’ll know El Vi because he is that… He was a fly guy. I mean back in the day, when nobody used to wear designer things, he used to wear them. So he was doing the most back then. Not like doing the most. But he was on top of his game. I also have friends who are into fashion. So it is almost like a competition. We keep competing with ourselves. My friends also influence me a lot. They’re like bro… you’re slipping. Get this. This fits you better. Thanks to them, I’ve been able to build my own style.
