To welcome the Class of 2021 into the Ashesi Community, a matriculation ceremony and a calabash ceremony were held to finalise the orientation week of the freshmen. The event was held at the Cornfield and Archer Courtyard on Friday, 8th September, 2017. The Matriculation is a formal way of welcoming them, while the calabash ceremony is the traditional way of saying Akwaaba to them.
Present at the Matriculation were the President of the institution, Dr. Patrick Awuah, the Provost, Dr. Suzanne Buchele, the Dean of Students and Community Affairs, Abdul Mahdi, Director of Logistics and Facilities Management, Casper Annie, heads of departments, and staff and faculty of the institution.
Representatives of the Ashesi Student Council initiated the Class of 2021 into the Ashesi Community through the calabash ceremony.
Each member of the Class of 2021 was handed an “Ashesi 2021” branded calabash
and provided with Ashesi purified water as a sign of welcoming them into the traditional home.
To finalize the traditional procedure, the freshmen had to drop their name tags into the Ashesi swag bag before walking back into the main gate of the school. A tradition indicating that they are officially part of the Ashesi Community.
The event went on amidst cultural drumming from the drummers from the Berekuso Township
