The CFO (Chief Financial Officer) Case Study Competition is an annual international multi-round business management and leadership-focused case study competition organised by The CharterQuest Institute of South Africa.
Last year, a team from the University of Ghana Business School, Team Snipers, made it to the final round of the competition and came out third. This year, another set of students of UGBS – Team Iris, have entered into the competition with the hopes of bringing the 1st-place trophy home.
This year’s competition required that teams, considered consultancies, analyse a 21-page case study on a multinational mining company (AMANGO Plc) in crisis, and come up with solutions to the company’s problems. These solutions are then required to be set forth to the company’s Board of Directors through a report and a presentation.
As a participant in the competition, Team Iris – consisting of four graduands of the University of Ghana Business School – analysed AMANGO’s problems and presented recommendations in its report, qualifying the team out of 370 teams globally, into the top 20. This feat would not have been achieved but for the help of lecturers and teaching assistants, as well as alumni of UGBS.
The top 20 qualifying teams include teams from universities in China, Germany, Indonesia, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zambia.
The members of Team Iris, the only Ghanaian representatives, are:

These graduands are all of the Accounting department, and team is mentored by Dr. William Coffie, also of the Accounting department.
Going forward, the team, if it qualifies into the top 6, will be invited to South Africa in October for a further two rounds of presentation, questions and answers, and an extension of the case. The top three teams will then be declared and awarded as follows:
First place:
– R100,000 (75% split to team and 25% to mentor & school/company) – Full tuition scholarship package to study with CharterQuest
Second place:
– Full scholarship package to study with CharterQuest – Any material gifts from sponsors e.g. calculators, tablets, books, etc.
Third place:
– Full scholarship package to study with CharterQuest
