Meet Dr. Abena Tannor; A Mandela Washington Fellow Who Is A Trailblazer in Public Health

Dr. Abena Tannor is one of Ghana’s young medical geniuses, has been chosen as one of this years, Mandela Washington Fellow 2017.

She is a Family Physician Specialist at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. Currently, Abena leads the first multi-disciplinary Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation team in Ghana, which seeks to improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities.

“Abena is passionate about disability advocacy and public education on medical and sexual health issues via media and talk shows. She conducts research aimed at improving multi-disciplinary rehabilitation in developing countries and is a member of the Cochrane Rehabilitation Advisory Board as well as an editorial board member of the International Journal of Therapy and Rehabilitation. Abena volunteers as a consulting physician on the BISA doctor health application software, partners with the Marriage Auditing Associates, and recently established the Step Out Foundation with her rehabilitation team.

Abena is a member of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and holds a Masters’ degree in Rehabilitation from the St. George’s University of London.

She envisions a society in which persons with disabilities are gainfully employed and independent; she also envisions a populace that is well-informed about medical and sexual health issues. Upon completion of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Abena plans to establish district multi-disciplinary rehabilitation teams, develop affordable locally-made assistive devices for persons with disabilities, and expand the public health education scope.”
