You may have heard that there was a bit of a misunderstanding at the Commonwealth Hall last week. We’re calling this one the PoloGate Scandal. I mean, you don’t have to call it that too. But it’s a pretty cool name. Because it’s about Polo…wait am I explaining? It’s a cool name.
Anyway, so we have all the inside scoop.
We’re in the second half of the 2016/2017 academic year, and Commonwealth students have still not received the Commonwealth Hall branded Polo T-Shirts (popularly known as “Lacostes”) they paid for. And it got all the more infuriating, considering how close the Commonwealth Hall week is.
The situation flared up when a few of the students decided t seek answers from the JCR Vice President. According to reports, he told them they were going to have to choose between their Hall Week celebrations and the T-Shirts. Now as you know, rep’ing your Hall during its Hall Week is considered something of a big deal, and so this was never going to end well.
So confusion broke. The angry students convened an emergency meeting, demanding an immediate refund. Their anger, it is reported, was fueled by the fact that they strongly suspected that the money had been embezzled by the JCR Executives. This is because, according to the students, the Hall Week celebrations are always funded by sponsors. Furthermore, there had been no discussion where the students had agreed to have their money re-purposed for Hall Week celebrations.
Reports reaching us indicate that as a result of the expression of anger by the students, the JCR President has assured the students, in a heartfelt Whatsapp message, that they will receive their t-shirts. So all’s well that ends well, right?
