Here Is All We Know About The Police Clash With KTI Students

There was a clash between students of Kumasi Technical Institute and police personnel which caused over 20 students injured and several others arrested. Here is a summary of the whole story:

  • Over twenty students of Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) have been hospitalised.
  • On Tuesday night, 14th February, 2017 there was a standoff between some police officers and KTI students who were returning from the Baba Yara Stadium after participating in the Inter-schools competition in the Ashanti Region.
  • The students had blocked a main road during their jubilant march after qualifying to the Super Zonals.
  • Due to that, some police officers were called in to ward off the students.
  • The students resisted and pelted stones at the police officers as they tried to unblock the road.
  • The police therefore called for reinforcement. In their quest to maintain law and order, they fired gunshots and tear gas when the students resisted.
  • The Ashanti Regional police PRO, Mr Tanko Yussif, said the police were forced to use tear gas to disperse the students when the students threw stones at them and refused to move the barricade on the road.
  • The Police officers later stormed the school’s dormitories vandalising doors and manhandle some students too.
  • Speaking to yen.com.gh, one injured student said they were in their in their dormitories when the police started beating them like armed robbers.
  • The Minister of Education, Mathew Opoku-Prempeh has stated that government would launch a full-scale investigation into the circumstances leading to the brutality unleashed on students of the KTI by the police officers
