There are so many things that you hear or read when you tell people that you are on a diet. You’d have many self-appointed dieticians advising you on what to eat, what not to eat and at what time you should eat them. You’d find that most of these tips are not proven facts and others, just simply outrageous. And they are many. From the fad that says to swallow a clove of garlic regularly just to lose weight to the ones that swear by the fact that you can eat anything you want as long as you stick your finger down in your throat so you throw up all you ate, some of these myths are far-fetched and downright dangerous, but sadly they are everywhere these days. So I took the pains to find out about exercise, what you can eat and how you can eat the right way. Your miseducation on dieting ends here. Here are some of the diet myths we need to stop believing.
You Burn Calories Only By Exercising
Your body burns calories by carrying out its many functions, not just by vigorous exercising. You could lose weight from doing relatively simple things like taking the stairs, improving your posture(standing taller and eliminating your slouch), or just out more energy into your daily activities.
Eating Carbs Is Unhealthy
There are two types of carbohydrates; simple and complex carbs. Simple carbs are found in foods like white rice , potatoes, white bread, etc. Simple carbs are bad for your weight-loss. Complex carbs like wholewheat bread(brown bread), fresh fruit and vegetables are a great source of energy and fill you up quicker so you’re not tempted to eat more than is necessary. Complex carbs are healthy.
You Should Drink 6 To 8 Glasses Of Water A Day
You should drink as much water as your body wants. This doesn’t mean that you stop drinking water once you finish your 8th glass. 8 glasses isn’t your body’s water-content ceiling. Drink as much as you want and if you’ve finished your 8th glass and you’re still thirsty, drink some more.
Don’t Eat After 6PM
This is a very common myth that a surprising number of people swear by. The idea behind this is the general thought that people aren’t as active after 6PM. But if you eat banku all day but refuse to eat anything after 6PM, you’re not going to trick your body into shedding off the pounds. The trick is to work off more calories than you eat in the day.
If You Eat Less You Would Lose Weight
Eating just 2 huge meals a day when you’re used to eating 4 huge meals a day doesn’t count as “eating less” and it’s not going to help your weight-loss process. On the contrary, you’re more likely to have some luck losing weight if you eat more times in the day. The trick is to eat very small portions of food about 5-6 times during the day to spend up your metabolism. A faster metabolism makes for a quicker weight-loss journey.
Chocolate may be bad for you; regular chocolate that is, but dark chocolate is great for you . It’s rich in an antioxidant called flavanol that’s found in the beans of the cocoa that’s used to produce the cocoa which improves blood-flow to the brain, elasticity of arteries and free flow of blood in the body. Sweets are not all bad then, but before you go crazy and stock up on dark chocolates. Moderation is key, guys.
Eating Fat Is Forbidden
Fat is actually good for you. Fats in food give it flavor and contribute to making food more filling, but should be moderate in our diet. Foods like salmon, avocados and olive oil contain the good fat that your body needs. Starving your body of fat will only make your skin dull and dry and make you get cold very quickly.Only excessive eating of fatty foods is bad for you so as long as you which fats you eat, you should not have a problem.
Brown Sugar Is Healthier Than White Sugar
Fundamentally speaking, brown sugar is the same as white sugar; they both have the same amount of calories. The difference between them is that molasses which is used in the production of brown sugar and gives it it’s brown colour contains essential nutrients like calcium , magnesium and vitamin B. These nutrients, however, are in such minute quantities that they wouldn’t contribute significantly towards your recommended daily amounts. So just like its white sister, brown sugar should be used moderately.
Olive Oil Is Low In Calories
This is one very common myth. The fact of the matter is that olive oil has as many calories as any other oils have, but it is healthier. Keyword here is “healthier”, not “good for you”. It may be healthier, bit in the end it’s till fat, so pouring a lot of it means that you’re consuming a lot of fat. And any kind of fat, consumed in excess, is bound to affect you negatively.
It’s Healthy To Drink Limitless A Of Fresh Juice
This came as a surprise to me as well! Apparently fruit juice gives your body too much sugar to process at once, just like soda and other sugary drinks. Also, the juicing process lets it lose some essential nutrients in addition to the fibre so you’re better of eating the actual fruit but if you will stick to juice, your daily intake should be no more than 3 glasses.
Brown Bread Is Healthier Than White Bread
In fact, speaking in terms of calories, both brown bread and white bread are the same. Brown bread just has a higher fiber-content because of the wheat used to make it and the fiber helps it break down in your body quicker.
