The 17th Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, is really a time to celebrate the best of the best in our music industry but there have been criticisms, worries and unanswered questions every year. For example, this year’s award for VGMA UNSUNG artiste was given to Adoma and people were disappointed because she does not have hit tracks that one can point to aside her sampling and remixes of what others have already composed.
Personally, I think she was a perfect choice for the category amongst the other nominees. Aside the selection criteria, she appears and looks more prepared or promising for that award. Questions pertaining credibility and originality of the whole awards scheme has also been raised?
People will agree or disagree with me over my VGMA 2016 predictions, but we all know opinions are individualistic, and we are all entitled to ours. These are my prediction for the 10 most competitive categories;
With the ‘Best New Artiste Of The Year’ category, it is a simple but competitive category for Kofi Kinaata and Atom. Donzy, NeroX and Wisa did their best within the year under review too but those two are surely the possible winners for that category.
The ‘All Black’ track by EL featuring Pappy Kojo and JoeyB or the ‘Nineteen Ninety’ track by Omar Sterling are the possible winners for the HipHop Song of the Year category. People will not understand or might disagree but that is my opinion.
With the ”Album of the year” category, it is a competition between Sarkodie’s ”Mary Album” and ”Elom Album” by EL. They both did exceptionally well with the marketing and the hype of the albums more than the other nominated albums in the category.
Funny enough the two artistes I selected in the Album of the Year category will have to repeat here too. The ‘Best Rapper of the Year’ will definitely go to either Sarkodie who has won it numerous times, or EL with ‘King Without A Crown’. These two really did well with rap, beat selection and stage act within the year under review.
‘Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year’ should have directly gone to Shatta Wale without any second thoughts, but with his exemption from ths year’s awards the best next possible winner will be Stonebwoy. He has really done a lot and performed on numerous stages in the name of Reggae and Dancehall from Ghana.
My possible winner for the ‘Overall Artiste of the Year’ would have been Bisa Kdei with his Mansa and Brother Brother as national hi tracks, but the recurring complains about his slow stage performances has made me lost vim slightly, but actually it is between him and EL.
Obaapa Christie is the best possible option for the ‘Gospel Song & Gospel Artiste’ Categories, but her highest competitors will be Nicholas Omane Achemong and SP Kofi Sarpong.
With the ‘Best Group’ category I have only one possible winner. It will be VVIP or no other group because they have worked really hard and they deserve it. R2Bees might also get considered if the ‘Skolom’ hitmakers do not win.
The ‘Song Writer of the Year’ category will also be a bit competitive but it will basically be between Kofi Kinaata with his ‘Susuka’ and Obrafour’s ‘Nkontompo’ looking at the lyrical content of both tracks. Stonebwoy’s with his ‘Go Higher’ stand a chance of winning aside these two too.
This is the easiest and most predictable category. ‘African Artiste Of The Year’ award will definitely go to WizKid because he is performing on the night. Patoranking can be his highest threat in this category though.
With the other categories, it will be hard to select possible winners because all the nominees did their best in terms of how well their songs performed.
