Accra was hot over the weekend because there were a lot of events going on at different locations. Generally, we would say they all went well if we are to evaluate.

The weekend events line-up started as early as Friday with the “VGMA Internal Launch” at the forecourt of the Vodafone Headquarters. You probably didn’t hear about it because it was an invite-only event for the Vodafone staff.

There was a competition amongst the various floors of the building. A team from each of the floors took their turn to perform with a live band. The motive was for every floor to select one VGMA nominee and perform a few tracks by the artiste.  The judges for the competition were Reggie Rockstone, Mark Okraku Mantey and Mr. Max whiles the MC for the event was TV Hostess and radio presenter Berla Mundi. DJ Vyrusky was on the turntable.  Kofi Kinaata, E.L and VVIP were the major acts who passed through the event performing few of their hit songs. The event ended around 7pm from where we moved to the Independence Square for Shatta Wale’s “After The Storm” Album Launch.

The free event for Shatta Wale’s fans was hosted by Joel Orleans of YFM and Kojo Manuel with Shatta’s official DJ; DJ Vyrusky on the turntable. Shatta Wale performed numerous tracks with a live band and though he was the only act to perform for the night, other few artistes he had collaborations with also passed through to perform their verses of the tracks they have with him. The surprising one was Sarkodie who was believed to have been out of the country. Duke of D2 and Pope Skinny were also on stage with him to perform a few tracks they have together. The attendance and response from the audience was great. In the end, the album launch went down in history books as one of the best “One-Man” concerts held.

Sarkodie Obidi and the CEO of the UT Group; Prince Kofi Amoabeng took KNUST students through their experiences and amazing success stories at the #XmenTour at the Great Hall. The attendance was impressive and the event went really well. The host of the event was Anita Erskine. This was on Saturday.

The maiden edition of the UCC SRC Awards 2016 was also held on Saturday. Rapper Kwaw Kese and gospel musician Ohemaa Mercy were honoured by the Students’ Representative Council of the school for the impacts they have made in the lives of the students with their music. Actor James Gardner was also honoured with a citation by the SRC. The event was held at the New Examination Centre (NEC). Winners from various categories nominated and voted for were also given award plaques.

There were a galaxy of stars at the Lizzy’s Sports Complex as the Juliet Ibrahim Foundation brought to fans the annual Celebrity Soccer Match, and this year it was between female celebrities from Ghana and Nigeria. The match ended 1:1 after 60 minutes of entertaining football. A range of popular faces from TV presenters to radio presenters to actors and actresses as well as musicians were there to support the course. The charity match was aimed at raising funds for kidney patients. Commentators for the match were Bismark the Joke and Gbenro Ajibade from Nigeria.
