Highlife is the main music genre West Africans are known for, but one way or the other it has either come to a stand still or is gradually fading off. Am happy to present to you today, a gentleman who believes Highlife is still alive!! #KuulOnCampus

Eshun is his real name, but because of his surname he is known in showbiz circles as EyShun. He completed Legon – Presec and is currently a Level 400 student at University of Ghana studying B.Arts (Information and Communication Studies). At the age of seven, he discovered music as a talent whiles he kept singing in church every weekend but he took it serious when he entered University.
Eyshun prefers highlife to other musical genres because he believes highlife is truly Ghanaian, and is the original music of the land.

This is ours and originally what we are known for. I can’t really relate to HipHop because English is not my language and the culture of guns and drugs is not our way of life, however highlife is not all I can do.

He told that combining academics and pursuing a musical career has really been stressful, because every single thing must rightfully be planned and a hard work towards it, will help achieve it.

Dedicating myself as a highlife artiste has taught me a lot, it has motivated me to learn how to play one of the instruments, specifically the acoustic guitar. It has also exposed me to a more matured kind of audience, who correct the flaws I make in the delivery of songs related to this genre. I am always advised on what to do, to get it right.

He added that, his 4-year life on campus has been hectic but fun, looking at the positive response, love and support he has received from the students and from other tertiary institutions. When asked about the kind of musical content he loves to sing around, he said; he is better off when he sings about love, life experiences and telling of stories. He concluded that; when the money comes, we will start to sing about money.

I love being creative by conceptualizing things and bringing them into reality. I look up to Dasebre Dwamena and Obrafour locally, then Ed-Sheeran as an inspiration outside Ghana.

EyShun’s shared his thoughts on the current state of the music industry. To him, he thinks it is gradually changing and getting better, unlike previously.

It is better now than before. Better videos, better picture quality, instrumentation and arrangements. The industry has a handful of people who are making it on the international front, I would have loved to see more Ghanaian artistes on the international market and stages.
I think, the government should also pay more attention to the music industry and invest in it as well, because music is a very strong tool for communicating to the citizenship.

Additionally, he said the new faces in the industry are really contributing their quota, with the likes of Mr. Eazi, Eugy, Kidi, Cina, BELCE, Adomaa, Steve Biko and Worlasi. He also promised Ghanaians to watch out for the change they are bringing into the game.

EyShun urged his fans to keep the support coming, till he wins the Grammys. This is the advice he gave the youth and upcoming artistes; he wants them to stay focused and push harder because there’s no time to waste. “If it must be done, then it must be done better. Don’t forget to build a better brand” he concluded.

3FS Productions is his new record label and they signed EyShun about a year ago. They are currently doing few studio recordings aside the hype and promotions for his newly released track, “Obuor Ba”. The video of the new track is also doing well. According to him, he said he has surprise features and singles in the pipeline. He ended the interview with this;

Am working seriously on my debut album which will drop soon.

We at commend EyShun for his passion to bring Ghanaian Highlife alive for young people to enjoy and appreciate just as he does. He is a songwriter and an amazing live performer, we wish him all the best.
