Yesterday, a clash between the natives and Zongo youth of Tafo in Kumasi led to the loss of one life and one other in critical condition. Kuulpeeps have gathered the account of how the clash started, what caused it and what is happening right now.
What Caused It:
The Zongo have over the years expressed concerns at how the chief of Old Tafo has been leasing off portions of their cemetery land closer to the roadside to the Suame Magazine people. In an effort to curb the situation, they decided to fence their portion of the cemetery. The project started last year but due to inadequate funds, it was halted and started again this last week.
Last week Saturday, the chief of Old Tafo tried to destroy the fence and was beaten down by the Zongo youth who were present. His loyalists, retaliated yesterday by destroying the rest of the fence. this infuriated the Zongo youth which started the bloody clash.
Man properties were destroyed in the process. A Policeman who was on duty at a nearby bank called Atwima Kwanwoman Rural Bank fired through the people and it resulted in the death of one Zongo Youth whiles another was hospitalized after surviving the gunshots. The bank, was therefore set on fire as well.
What Is Happening Now:
As part of measures to contain the escalating violence, the Ashanti Regional Security Council has imposed a dust to dawn curfew from 6pm to 6am on the Tafo township.
