8 facts about the newly appointed Vice Chancellor of University of Ghana, PROF. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu

From 1st August, Professor Ebenezer Owusu Oduro takes over from Professor Ernest Aryeetey as Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana and here are some facts about the new Vice Chancellor.

  • He was Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Science and part of his vision was “To lay a strong and sustainable foundation in all measurement categories of academic productivity (high quality deliverables), that impact national development and enhance international competitiveness of the College”

 

  • Born on 11 December 1960, Professor Ebenezer started his education at the Coca Research Institute of Ghana Primary School, Akim Tafo, before obtaining his Ordinary and Advanced Level School Certificate at St. Peter’s Secondary School (Nkwatia Kwahu) and Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS), Takoradi.

 

  • He graduated with a Second Class Upper Division in Bachelor of Science in Agricultural back in 1987. He was a Teaching/Research Assistant for two years before earning a scholarship for his master’s degree

 

  • He completed his PhD in Japan where he was awarded the gold medal award for best PhD Candidate. He remained at Kochi University(Japan) where he was made Associate Professor and Professor in 1995.

 

  • In 1998, Professor Owusu was appointed lecturer at the then Department of Zoology, University of Ghana (now Animal Biology and Conservation Science).  He was promoted to Senior lecturer in September 2000 and then to Associate Professor and Professor in June 2005, and March 2010 respectively.

 

  • He personally built a laboratory (Food Security) at the University of Ghana for use by staff and students.  He was solely responsible for the acquisition and installation of a Scanning Electron Microscope (first of its kind in West Africa, worth US$500,000) through a grant from the Government of Japan.

 

  • In August 2008, Professor Owusu was significantly decorated as a “LIVING LEGEND” by the People of Kochi Japan for his contribution to Science and the Internationalization of Kochi city.

 

  • Prof. wusu is currently the Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, having previously served as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science, and Dean/Ag. Dean of the School of Biological Sciences, University of Ghana. His hardwork for the then Department of Zoology as the Head of Department led to the change of the name to the Animal Biology and Conservation Science.
  • He is the first African to be selected as Kochi Prefecture Ambassador for Internationalization and Tourism by the Governor of Kochi Prefecture in recognition of his outstanding efforts in internationalizing Kochi Prefecture and introducing Yosakoi Festival in Ghana
