WhatsApp has, from today, dropped its annual charge of $0.99 for subscription and is now totally free.

Jan Koum, co-founder of Whatsapp, said “We just don’t want people to think that at some point their communication to the world will be cut off.” He also recognised that credit cards weren’t available to everyone so paying for a subscription, no matter how little the amount, “doesn’t work that well.” Whatsapp says they aren’t going to lose any income from this change, as they plan to use the app to let paying business organisations reach clients.

Up until now, users had a one year free trial and had to pay for the subsequent years. While the no-charge change takes effect immediately, it may take a while to reach all versions of the app, and those who’ve already paid for their subscription do not get a refund. Remember that green screen with the daunting countdown of the number of months you had left in your free trial? It’s now gone forever!
