2015 has been a tough year for the Ghanaian economy, with some industries already shutting down. However, some brands were amazing and stood out amidst the economic hardship.
Excellence In Broadcasting- EIB
Excellence In Broadcasting (EIB) Networks, the media company owned by former Finance Minister, Kwabena Duffor, and run by Nathaniel Kwabena Anokye Adisi (Bola Ray) acquired eight radio stations this year. In Accra, it owns Adepa FM, Kasapa FM, Live FM, and Starr FM. The network also owns Ultimate FM in Kumasi, Agoo in Eastern Region and Empire FM in Takoradi. Not only does it own these radio stations, the brand has also made almost all the major media poaches this year; from hiring Miss Naa away from Y Fm to Live FM (a move that didn’t last) to giving Fiifi Banson (formerly of Peace FM) his own morning show on Kasapa FM.
Recently, it concluded the purchase of GhONE TV which has already signed TV presenter Nana Aba Anamoah to the station. In philanthropy, the network donated $5,000 to ailing former Actors Guild President Nii-Odoi Mensah.
The online market place showed Ghanaians that we are capable of marketing in a way that their competitiors don’t. With their very successful Tonaton FreshAfair tour that took them to the three biggest University Campuses in the country, they made a bigger name for themselves in 2015. According to November 2015 Alexa Rankings, it is the 10th most visited Ghanaian website and has it’s stickers behind almost every public transport vehicle in the country. They also recently launched Tonaton Delivers, a service that is aimed at addressing one of their biggest issues; which is people getting defrauded by potential sellers or buyers they meet on the site. These are big strides for a company that has only been operating for about two years.
The idea to give the power to the people this year was a success for Vodafone Ghana. It’s unmatched Vodafone X offer was heavily applauded and accepted as a lifestyle brand by the Ghanaian youth with as much 400,000 subscribers as of November 2015.
Their Vodafone X concerts in three regions- Accra, Cape Coast and Sunyani- were amongst the most successful concerts organized in 2015.
Twellium Company Limited
Nsawam based Twellium Company Limited, producers of Rush Energy Drink had a great year largely because Rush Energy Drink was massively patronized. Despite rumors of its toxic content, the company was able to successfully handle the negative rumors. It has been one of the most sought after energy drinks for Ghanaians in 2015.
Their other products, American Cola and Verna Mineral Water also performed very well in 2015
Adinkra Pastries has been the most popular pastry brand in 2015. It’s Adinkra Pie has captured the interest of consumers and has strongly taken over pastries in both Kumasi and Accra this year.
According to the company, it has employed over 800 people to sell their products. You may have seen them in Adinkra-branded T-shirts in traffic around town.
Kantanka Automobile Co
The automobile company launched the first Ghana-made cars this year in a ceremony graced by President Mahama and other high-ranking dignitaries. It had made 30 cars as of February this year and is expected to take over the African market. Kantanka Automobile put Ghana on the map this year when news of its mass production was carried by international media. It is a big step in the Ghanaian Industrial revolution; one worth applauding.
Joy Industries Limited, producers of Joy Dadi Bitters continued to succeed this year. For a relatively new brand, Joy Dadi has had a lot competition with veteran, Kasapreko. The bitters, popularly called J.D has maintained its popularity throughout the year and is heavily patronized by Ghanaians.
This year, the brand was also awarded by the West Africa Magazine as the Fastest Growing Herbal Company Award in the Year 2014
By the end of June 2015, Tigo’s subscriber base had increased to 4,490,078-representing 13.87% of the market share. Its popular ‘Drop That Yam’ campaign, which was one of the biggest ads this year ensured an increased 15.01 % data subscriber base as of July 2015 for the telecommunication giants. The “Y3nsor nkoaa” promo was also patronized massively with its customers receiving power plants, generators, invertors, among others as rewards daily. It has had a great year in marketing.
Their Tigo Unplugged Show was one of the biggest in the year under review.
Despite Group of Companies
The holding company which owns Peace FM, Okay FM, Neat FM and UTV grabbed seven awards at this year’s edition of the Radio and Television Personality Awards held at the Conference Centre (AICC) in Accra.
Despite Group of Companies also had businesses such as Special Investments; producers of Special Ice Mineral Water and Atona Food; the makers of This Way Chocolate Drink.
The Coca Cola Bottling Company
The brand embarked on one of its most extensive campaigns in recent times this year when it celebrated a century of its iconic bottle, the bottle which has been the unique selling point for Coca Cola. The Kiss Ohemaa campaign was arguably one of Cokes biggest marketing campaigns in a while.
Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana (CIMG) honored the brand with both Outdoor Advert and Marketing Practitioner of the Year 2014 award.
We are hoping for a better and robust economy next year so that brands can freely invest in other sectors of the economy.
