UEFA has released the Champions League teams playing each other in a bid to advance to the quarter-finals of the tourney. The Champions league draw which took place today sees Arsenal take on Catalan giants Barcelona. Real Madrid take on the Italy’s Roma while Manchester City breathe a sigh of relief drawing Dynamo Kiev in the Champions league draw.
Gent take on Wolfsburg with PSV taking on Torres’s Athletico Madrid. Chelsea meets the Princes from France, PSG with Zenit St. Petersburg taking on Benfica. Juventus FC play a final before final after drawing German giants Bayern Munich. Here are some facts with the Knockout round set to kick off on 16/17 February next year.
- Chelsea’s draw with PSG is the fourth with Chelsea winning 2 and losing 1. This meeting would be a revenge mission for Ibrahimovic who was shown a red card during their previous encounter. Drogba scored two and Terry also got his name on the scoreboard when both sides met in the group stages back in 2004. Demba Ba sent Chelsea through to the semi-finals when they meet again in 2014 but Luiz and Silva made sure history didn’t repeat itself the following year knocking Chelsea out of the Champions league at this very stage.
- Arsene Wenger might not be the closest person to be with now. Having lost his entire knockout round matches since 2010 drawing Barcelona, Bayern Munich (twice) and Monaco in the past four years. Barcelona on the other hand have been champions thrice in a space of 7 years showing how far the catalan club usually go into the competition. Neymar, Suarez and in form Messi would definitely be a handful for the North Londoners. Messi scored his first quartet against Arsenal back in 2010.
- Juventus won during the earlier encounter back in 2005 but lost to the Bavarians in 2013 with an aggregate score of 0-4. This encounter would see Allegri meet old foe Guardiola who made minced meat of him when he managed AC Milan. Both teams would like to advance from this stage with Juventus (last year’s finalist) eager to continue on their fine European form.
- Real Madrid secured their 10th title back in 2014 while Italian giants haven’t been across the group stage of this tourney. Ronaldo is leading the pack for goalscorer in this year’s tourney and would like to continue this form. AsRoma already met Spanish opposition in the form of Barcelona and where able to pull a draw out of them in the Olympic stadium back in Rome.
This year’s knockout stage would kick off from February 16/17 with Chelsea visiting France and Barcelona coming to London. Manchester City make their way to the cold region to play Dynamo Kyiv
