Pan African Universities Debate Championship Starts Off At Legon

Prof Ayeetey

The Vice Chancellor of University of Ghana, Professor Ernest Aryeetey has said that sports and debate are the two main activities that necessitated the elevation of sports at the University to a full Directorate. The directorate is now headed by Dr Bella Bello Bitugu, whose efforts secured theUniversity’s hosting rights of the 8th Pan African Universities Debate championship for Legon.

He mentioned this during his  address at the opening ceremony of the 8th Pan African Universities Debate championship which took place at the University of Ghana campus on Thursday. Explaining the importance of sports to students, Prof Aryeetey said that much of what is required in life is learnt through sports.

He further touched on the importance of debate to students at all levels.

The other phenomenon is debate. Debate challenges the students to come up with critical analysis, think outside the box, be creative and be able to convince others of why this or that position is best.

Twenty (20) African  countries are taking part in the competition  currently underway at University of Ghana, Legon and it is expected to end on  December 17.
