13 Things You Should Know About Grammy Nominee Rocky Dawuni


In case you haven’t heard, Ghanaian Reggae Artiste, Rocky Dawuni, received a Grammy Nomination for his album, Branches of the same tree. We decided to find out about the man who has once again put Ghana on the map. Here are 13 facts you probably didn’t know about Rocky.

1. Rocky Dawuni is a member of the royal family of the Konkomba tribe in Northern Ghana, specifically from Bunbon Nayili.

2. He grew up in Michel Camp, a Military Baracks in Accra. His father, Koytau Dawuni, was a military cook.

3. His brother Wumbe Dawuni is currently the Chief of their hometown. A position their father held after he retired from the military

4. Rocky is the second of 8 children

5. Rocky Dawuni studied Philosophy and Psychology at the University of Ghana

6. While in University, Rocky Dawuni formed the band Local Crisis with his friends. Their first demo was made by them singing directly into a tape recorder. The instruments they used were an acoustic guitar, a drum kit made out of cardboard boxes and a toy keyboard.

7. Rocky Dawuni’s life partner, Cary Sullivan who is a photographer and producer, doubles as his manager.

8. Dawuni’s Music has been featured in popular TV shows such as ER, Weeds and Dexter.

9. Dawuni’s song ‘African Soccer Fever’ was included on the FIFA World Cup South Africa video game from EA Sports, one of many times Dawuni’s songs have been included in EA video games.

10. In 2012, Dawuni was appointed the Tourism and Cultural Ambassador of Ghana and World Ambassador for the Musicians Union of Ghana

11. His first international exposure came through the 1998 Putumayo collection Reggae Around the World, which featured his song “In Ghana,” alongside tracks by Lucky Dube, Burning Spear, Ernest Ranglin and others

12. In March 2012, Rocky headlined the Balispirit Festival in Bali, Indonesia for the second time in three years and received a glowing feature in Rolling Stone Indonesia

13. He has worked on campaigns focused on Guinea worm eradication, environmental issues, women’s health and education, HIV Aids advocacy, peace building and clean water
