Its the Sony World Photography Awards 2018. The awards is a partnership between Sony and the World Photography Organisation and has been running for a decade. Their aim is to showcase the best photography in the world.

The World Photography Organisation is the global platform for photography initiatives. Operating across 180 countries, their aim is to raise the level of conversation around photography by celebrating the world’s best imagery and photographers.

The awards is divided into various categories and each category has its own specifications and deadline.

Professional Category -The Professional competition is judged on a body of work.  Photographers must submit a minimum of 5 and maximum of 10 images and all submissions must be accompanied by a series description. At the pinnacle of the Professional competition is the title of Photographer of the Year, one of the most distinguished and highly regarded awards in photography. The winner is chosen each year by the Honorary Jury from among the first place winners of all the Professional categories.

In addition to the main prizes, all winning and shortlisted photographers will be included in a global press campaign, featured across the World Photography Organisation website and exhibited at Somerset House, London in the Spring.

You may only enter one competition. Once you have successfully submitted your images into the Professional competition you will not be able to enter the Open or Youth competition.

The closing date for the 2018 Professional competition is January 11, 2018 – 13.00 GMT. Click HERE to submit entries.

 

Open Category –  The judges are looking to award the best single images from across the 10 diverse categories, from Architecture and Landscape to Still Life and Street Photography.

In addition to the main prizes, winning and shortlisted photographers will be included in a global press campaign, featured across the World Photography Organisation website and exhibited at Somerset House, London in Spring 2018.

In each category judges will award:

  • 1 winner
  • Up to 10 shortlisted photographers
  • Up to 40 commended photographers

You may only enter one competition. Once you have successfully submitted your images into the Open competition you will not be able to enter the Professional or Youth competition.

Youth Category –  The competition helps young photographers grow and flourish into the next stages of their careers. Judges are looking for good composition, creativity and clear photographs.

The 2018 brief: Your environment

The judges want to view the world as seen through the eyes of young photographers.

In one single image show the judges your environment. The brief should be understood in its widest sense.  “Your environment” could be a photograph sharing your culture or religious celebration, highlighting of an issue close to home, a special family moment or a beautiful landscape of your surroundings.
In addition to the main prizes, all winning and shortlisted photographers will be included in a global press campaign, featured across the World Photography Organisation website and exhibited at Somerset House, London in Spring 2018.

The judges will award:

  • 1 Youth competition winner
  • Up to 10 shortlisted photographers
  • Up to 40 commended photographers

To enter the Youth competition you must be aged between 12-19 on the closing date.
​You may only enter one competition. Once you have successfully submitted your images into the Youth competition you will not be able to enter the Professional or Open competition.

Student Focus Category – Each year all registered universities are given a unique 1st challenge, with a time frame given for their students to respond and submit a single image per university. A shortlist of 10 students are then selected and given a 2nd and final challenge.

All shortlisted photographers are given Sony digital imaging equipment and flown to London to attend the Sony World Photography Awards ceremony, with the winner receiving €30,000 worth of Sony photography equipment for his or her university. All shortlisted photographers will be able to attend a morning of intimate portfolio reviews with World Photography Organisation editorial staff and the Student Focus judges.

To take part in the Student Focus competition your institution needs to be registered. Please check our list of participating institutions or you  can ask your photography tutor to register your institution. The registration and submission process must be completed by tutors, if your university is registered or needs to be registered please contact your photography tutor. Students must be between 18 – 30 years of age on the closing date of the competition. 

The deadline for the 2018 Student Focus competition is December 4, 2017.

Unfortunately, there is no Ghanaian university in the list of participating schools, but if your mind dey you can talk to your lecturers so they register your school, then you can participate. You for look sharp because the deadline for this one is pretty close. Click HERE to submit entries.
