This Is How Ivorians Are Reacting To Losing The ITLOS Case, It Ain’t Pretty

You must know by now that Ghana has won a landmark case against Ivory Coast.

The case was about our territorial sea boundaries. Our sea boundary with Ivory Coast became very important since oil and gas were discovered in the area.

Ivory Coast believed that our current oil fields were in their territorial waters.

After years of back and forth negotiations, Ghana took the case to the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in September 2014.

The ITLOS’s first ruling in 2015 placed a moratorium on new projects, with old projects continuing after Ivory Coast filed for preliminary measures and urged the tribunal to suspend all activities on the disputed area until the definitive determination of the case.

Yesterday, the court did read out its definitive determination of the case and Ghana won. Our oil fields are safe and so is Free SHS, because it is being funded with money from the oil revenue.

While Ghana’s social media rejoiced and praised the two attorneys, Marietta Brew Appiah–Oppong and Gloria Akuffo for leading our legal team, Ivorian social media was ruing over their loss.

Here are some of the Ivorian reaction to Ghana’s win.

Hint: They are as divided along political lines as we are:

Yes, Nana Addo and Alassane Ouattara are friends. Alassane was the Guest of Honour at Nana Addo’s inauguration but Nana Addo needs to secure his Free SHS policy. No hard feelings our Ivorian friends. It wasn’t personal.
