Aged 66, influential Congolese music star Papa Wemba has died after collapsing on stage in Abidjan in Ivory Coast. He died before he could be brought to a hospital.
According to an account by BBC, he slumped on the floor as his dancers continued to perform, unaware of what was happening.
Papa Wemba was known for his soukous rock music and in recent times, he was named in a number of scandals.
He was convicted of smuggling people in France and spent three months in prison in 2004. He was once jailed in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), for allegedly having an affair with a general’s daughter.
In Belgium, he was convicted of trafficking in 2012, handing down a fine of 22,000 euros (£17,143; $24,690) and suspended prison sentence of 15 months.
He remains one of Africa’s most popular musicians.
